Los Cabos — this glamorous enclave started as a playground for the Hollywood set back in the 1940s.

Stars like Clark Gable and Henry Fonda were soon joined by presidents, royalty and industry tycoons. Cabo quickly became a firm favorite on the jet-set calendar — joining the likes of Monte Carlo and Gstaad.

Today’s big-name visitors in Cabo run from George Clooney to King Mswati of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). The king brought a 70-strong entourage with him — including his 15 wives — on his recent trip to Cabo.

And tourist numbers in Cabo are up this year compared with last. New flight routes are also being added. Cabo currently has 345 weekly flights to the United States. Two new routes from Dallas and Phoenix for 2020 were recently announced. And TUI will start a London-to-Cabo direct flight before year-end.

Travel + Leisure named Cabo one of the best places to visit in 2019. Lonely Planet says it’s “made for decadence.” Fodor’s ranks it as “Mexico’s ultimate seaside escape.”

Cabo Flight Times from North America

Cabo is easy to get to — thanks to short flight times across much of North America.

Cabo’s appeal is unique. There’s no place quite like it. White sand beaches fringe a desert landscape, with the fingers of giant cardon cactuses (some of which are 500 years old) pointing to the bright blue sky overhead.

The desert is a place that feels primeval… unspoiled… where you can get back to nature. At night, the glimmer of millions of stars lights up the dark skies. It’s a magical experience.

Cabo sits at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Sea of Cortez to the east. Jacques Cousteau labeled this rich, diverse sea “the world’s aquarium.”

Here you can see blue whales, dolphins, giant manta rays, sea lions and more than 900 species of fish. This morning, I saw the first whales of the season drift by…

Add in a layer of jet-set amenities like luxury hotels, posh spas, world-class golf courses and great dining spots, and you can see why so many want to visit — or own a home — in Cabo.

El Arco, Cabo

Cabo is, quite frankly, stunning… where the mighty Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez at the famous rocky arch, El Arco.

When I first identified opportunity in Cabo in late 2014, the real estate market was at a low point. It had been heavily exposed to North American buyers and heavily geared to expensive timeshares, so when the financial crisis hit the U.S. in 2007, the music stopped. Buyers stopped coming. Timeshare sales fell off a cliff. And then Hurricane Odile swept through in 2014 — compounding Cabo’s woes.

But sometimes a low point such as this can bring benefits. In this case, Cabo took a deep breath… reassessed its future… and set its sights on going even more upscale.

It has definitely bounced back. The pace of growth is little short of meteoric. It has been transformed by more than $4 billion, pumped into new five-star resorts, new golf courses, even new infrastructure.

This is now my winter base. I’m escaping the wet, gray weather back home in Ireland. Here in Cabo, I’ve got blue skies and sunshine. And a very high quality of life that’s hard to match.

The sunrise this morning was spectacular. My morning routine is to stroll down to the beach and pop open my laptop. Working doesn’t seem so bad when the “office” comes with an ocean view and a soft breeze.

Once work is over, I can relax by the pool… hit some balls on the range… or walk the many trails that wind their way by the beach, across low bluffs and around the golf course.

I’m living the life that many folks dream of.

Better yet, I’m already sitting on significant gains.

The members-only price on my ocean-view condo when I bought in 2015 was $336,156. The community is pretty much built out. The most recent price list from the developer shows a similar two-bed condo — the last of its kind in this community — with a price tag of $630,088.

That’s a very impressive $293,932 in paper gains.

That’s the upside of Real Estate Trend Alert. Nobody else will get access to deals like this — to buy Cabo luxury at a big discount.

But the window in Cabo is fast closing. If you’re looking for a place in the sun — where you can enjoy capital gains, good rental returns and a fabulously chic lifestyle — Cabo is the one for you.
